Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon: A Dark Chapter in Srirangapatna’s History
Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon, located in the historic town of Srirangapatna, stands as a grim reminder of the brutalities of war and captivity during the Anglo-Mysore conflicts. This dungeon was used by Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Mysore Kingdom, to imprison captured British officers during the Anglo–Mysore Wars.
The Tragic Fate of Colonel Bailey
Among the many prisoners held in this dungeon was Colonel Bailey, a British officer captured by Tipu Sultan during the Second Anglo-Mysore War at the Battle of Pollilur in 1780. He endured months of imprisonment under inhumane conditions and ultimately succumbed to the hardships in 1782. As a result, the dungeon was later named in his memory, symbolising the suffering of war prisoners.
